If something could help my dog’s anxiety, arthritis, and lipomas, I certainly want to know more about it. That’s been the journey I’ve taken over the last several years with CBD research. Why I started giving my dog CBD whole hemp oil might be surprising to some, but as always I share my dog’s health adventures on this blog.
A ton of information exists about CBD and hemp oil, marijuana, and THC, some of which is pointedly spot on and others that miss the mark completely. As a diligent pet parent and dog health and wellness writer, it’s my responsibility to be the voice for my dog, advocate in his best interests, and bring my results, research, and data to you. I’ll break this down into easy-to-follow facts coupled with our experience and then you can decide if CBD whole hemp oil is right for your dog.
As always, check with your dog’s veterinarian before adding any supplements. I cannot guarantee the same results for your dog, but I can share with you everything I know, everything I learned, and help you be a more informed pet parent. Plus I’m giving away three bottles of Veritas Farms whole hemp oil pet tincture at the bottom of this post.
What Is CBD Whole Hemp Oil
CBD (cannabidiol) is found in both cannabis and hemp. In most cases, CBD does not contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol, the chemical responsible for most of marijuana’s psychological effects), which is the compound in marijuana that leads to a “high.” CBD is not psychoactive, so there is no end result “high.”
In the cannibis plant, one of the ingredients is cannabidol. So when ingesting CBD, the goal is to help alleviate discomfort (nausea, pain, anxiety, seizure control), with little to no noticeable effect on cognition.
It took me forever and a day to decide on which CBD product I wanted to start giving my dog. Because I won’t write about something I don’t have first-hand experience with, I take my time, talk to experts, go with what is best for me and my dog, and then I document everything.
Not all CBD is created equal, the consumer must be very savvy in doing his or her research to source the right brand for their dog.
Why I Started Giving My Dog Whole Hemp Oil
As the founder of a highly engaged Cocker Spaniel Facebook group called Club Cocker, I started to see the incredible feedback and testimonials from dog parents about the effects of CBD on their animals. Each experience was different and each person had a distinct reason for administering CBD oil to their dog. The commonality in the group came in the shared successes. Dog moms and dog dads touted the successes of controlling their dogs’ various medical ailments.
Here are a few of the things they said:
We have a 10-year-old chocolate Lab with separation anxiety and joint pain. We started her on pet CBD oil drops about a month ago and she has done a complete 180! Before, we couldn’t even get her to pep up. Walking up the stairs was a challenge for her. She hasn’t pranced or played much in at least a year. Even if she had an occasional burst of energy, it would only last seconds. Now she has energy, her coat looks great, her eyes are clearing up, her skin isn’t itchy, her hips and joints don’t seem to be in pain, and her fatty tumors even seem to be getting smaller. Her separation anxiety has never been better! This oil is no joke! So happy for my puppy!
I have a Cocker mix. I have him on CBD oil and he is doing better. He has CCD, CHF, Dog Parkinson’s, and thyroid issues. (I love him with all my heart!) He is one of my hospice dogs.
I have used CBD oil with my Cocker mix for approximately three months to help with her sound sensitivity. It seemed to help quickly after starting, just took the edge off with no side effects.
We are 1 week into our dog being totally off the Keppra & using only CBD oil. No seizures so far *knock on wood* & he is even losing a little weight (which he needed). Praying we continue on this pawsitive path!! Vet was very on board with this, which was encouraging.
This piqued my curiosity and began my research journey. During this time, the folks at Veritas Farms approached me about trying the product on my dog, but I needed further convincing and research.
My dog, Dexter, is now on CBD whole hemp oil because I want him to find relief from arthritis and perhaps decrease the size of his canine lipomas. They aren’t super big but they are there, and any lipoma is one I don’t want on my dog.
Dog lipomas are sometimes called fatty tumors and they grow under a dog’s skin. Because CBD may have an antitumorigenic effect, meaning stopping or growing things like this, I wanted to give it a try IF I felt comfortable doing so.
Beyond that, Dexter suffers from occasional anxiety – perhaps even dread – at the sound of fireworks and thunderstorms. If CBD whole help oil from Veritas Farms could help that in some way, how awesome would that be?!
Before Starting My Dog On CBD Whole Hemp Oil
First, I learned as much as humanly possible about the Veritas Farms product. Then I talked to my dog’s veterinarian and then to my dog’s cardiologist. Here’s what I discovered. If you like science and the facts behind it, here it is.

What The Experts Say About CBD Whole Hemp Oil
Fact: Hemp-based CBD contains less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive component in marijuana. Unlike cannabis, hemp is now legal in all 50 states. In December of last year, Congress passed H.R.2. Titled the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, the bill effectively removed hemp from its previous classification as a Schedule I drug. According to the federal government, Schedule I drugs have no recognized medical benefit.
Fact: The efficacy of CBD is no longer up for debate; the World Health Organization (WHO) recently recommended that CBD be rescheduled. You can read the report.
Fact: Here’s what the FDA has to say about it: “The FDA is currently collecting information about marijuana and marijuana-derived products being marketed for animals. FDA reminds consumers that these products have not been evaluated by FDA for safety and effectiveness, and we recommend that you talk with your veterinarian about appropriate treatment options for your pet.”
Fact: Cornell University did a study and the results are very encouraging with regard to CBD and dogs. “The results were significant, according to the researchers with over 80% of the dogs taking the CBD oil showing “significant improvement in pain levels and quality of life” without discernible side-effects.”
Fact: Colorado State University shared a release on the preliminary data from the (pilot) study looking at CBD as a treatment for epilepsy in dogs. Bottom line? “Based on her research, she found that 89 percent of dogs who received CBD in a clinical trial had a reduction in the frequency of seizures.
How Veritas Farms Whole Hemp Oil Pet Tincture Works
The pet tincture is used for joint issues and mobility, as one of the main benefits of CBD is its anti-inflammatory properties. The tincture is designed to be circumstantial, as needed, or as an everyday product. How much you give depends on the size and need of the dog. Here’s the chart dosing from Veritas Farms:
According to Chad Lio, Director of Marketing at Veritas Farms, “Putting it in food should have no affect on the absorption. I actually administer both to my dogs. I put it in their food in the morning and then just give it to them orally at night. ”
I simply added a 1 ml dropper full of the tincture to Dexter’s food once a day. It is available in two doses: 100 mg and 200 mg and we used the 200 mg for about 32 days as of this writing. Dexter wasn’t interested in slurping it from the dropper, but some dogs are into that and if your dog is, go for it.
The pet tincture ingredients are: full spectrum CBD Oil (contains less than .3% THC), organic MCT ( medium-chain triglycerides) oil, and fish extract powder or natural bacon flavoring.
I am told that there will be an expanded pet line coming soon, but the tincture is available now and what has been a part of our lives for over a month.
The pet tincture has been available since Veritas Farms has been in business and is one of their core products. For me, this means its been around a while and I take comfort in that.
So far, so good with Dexter. He had his cardiology appointment in early April, and his results were phenomenal. We started him on a traditional compounded medicine, he takes supplements from our friends at Dr. Harvey’s and eats their diet, too, and he now has Veritas Farms whole hemp oil pet tincture on his food once a day.
I notice he is more energetic for a 10-years-young dog. I notice that he acts like a much younger dog. My spouse and I strive to keep our dogs feeling young because we both believe age is just a number. I have not seen a major decrease yet in the size of his lipomas, but it’s too soon to tell and I plan to keep using it. I love that it also can be contributing to joint issues, as he is a two-time ACL repair dog, and he has spinal arthritis.
When we meet people, they usually think he is much younger, and that makes me feel proud. It makes me happy for my dog. We get regular blood work on our dog, and his last blood draw for CBC and full chemistry profile was early April, at which point it was pristine. He will be re-tested in June.
Can CBD Oil Cause Side Effects In Dogs
I have not seen any negative side effects in my dog to date since he has been on the Veritas Farms CBD pet tincture. Because this is a fact-based blog on health and wellness, this is what we learned on the topic of side effects: there is no scientific data on side effects of CBD usage in dogs. There are side effects reported in humans that use CBD. Those side effects in humans include: dry mouth, lowered blood pressure, and drowsiness. You can read more about the possible side effects of CBD in dogs here.
