Winner named of Fido Ready for Winter Kit: Winter pet safety tips contest

Can you believe it’s October already? I feel like I just put the decorations away from last year and now here we are, ready to brace for old man Winter to rear his chilly head. With winter comes the dreaded treks outside into cold weather when Fido needs a walk, some fresh air, or just to get the cabin fever blues out of his system. Time for the winter pet safety tips contest.

To help keep pets safe this winter, Morton Salt’s Safe-T-Pet® ice melt is sponsoring a public service campaign that culminates on Dec. 22, 2011, with “National Keep Pets Safe in Winter Day” in support of the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®). The campaign is focused on increasing awareness of pet safety during winter months which can be dangerous on our four-legged friends.

In addition, one lucky Fidose of Reality fan will receive a “Get Fido Ready for Winter” kit just for paw-ticipating!

Winner for this one is: Bea Synder

Fidose of Reality is committed to dogs and their health and well-being. Part of that care involves keeping Fido’s precious paws and pads safe all winter (and all year) long. We’ll be featuring winter care tips and hints and asking our readers to get involved.

In partnership with Morton Salt’s Safe-T-Pet® ice melt, we ask that you join us in increasing pet safety awareness all winter long. Winter is a very dangerous time of year for pets, so we take no chances in spreading the word about keeping our beloved family members safe. Each week from now through December 22nd, National Keep Pets Safe in Winter Day, Fidose of Reality will post 5 dog safety tips for winter care.

Morton will donate an additional $1 to the ASPCA for every unique “like” received between October 1, 2011 and January 31, 2012 (up to $75,000 in total donations).

Here are this week’s FIVE Winter Safety Tips:

  1. WIPE: Keep Fido’s legs and tummy dry when he or she comes in from the snowy season. Sleet, snow and ice can collect on their fur and feet. If he’s been on a walk and happened to step on antifreeze or unsafe ice melt, then he licks his paws, this can be very dangerous.
  2. CAR SAFETY: Never leave a dog alone in a car. During the winter, cars hold in the cold and become “refrigerator” like. Not only is a dog alone in a car unsafe for theft reasons, but also for life-and-death ones, too. KEEP THEM SAFE.
  3. DRY: After a bath, before sure the dog is completely dry before going outside. A sweater that covers tail to belly is the best bet.
  4. ID: It goes without saying, but dogs get extra sniffs and scents and even get a little “excited and hyper” shall we say, when the snow falls. If Fido should ever get loose, an ID tag, GPS collar, and/or microchip will serve you well.
  5. PAW CARE: If a dog steps on chloride and/or salt-based ice melt, this can be very dangerous and hard on precious pads. Using an ice melter like Morton® Safe-T-Pet™, which is salt-free and chloride-free, is organic, non-toxic and non-irritative to paws and stomachs. Read labels of ice melters carefully and choose one like Morton’s.

  1. Devri Owens says

I “liked” the page and shared it as well. I remember one Winter, we had just put ice melt on the back patio. We let one of our dogs out to go potty. To this day, I can still hear his scream when his paws hit that ice melt. It was awful. So, we don’t put ice melt back there anymore. We just go out and shovel the best we can so he can go potty. It would be nice to have something pet friendly so we don’t have to worry about that again.
