Hero Dogs Every Dog Lover Should Know

Hero dogs give so much of themselves, and they ask for so little in return. In that respect, ALL dogs are hero dogs to love us so freely without regard for gender, color, or any other human-based discrimination. Here are some hero dogs every dog lover should know. After reading about these committed canines, give your own pups a pat on the head and an extra biscuit today:

K9s For Warriors

You know the difference a dog can make. K9s For Warriors knows, too. K9s For Warriors provides service canines to military warriors suffering from post-traumatic stress disability (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, and/or military sexual trauma as a result of military service post-9/11. Their goal is to empower them to return to civilian life with dignity and independence.

In other words, the power of dogs. As of May, 2017, 570 dogs have been rescued and 312 warriors have been rescued through the K9s for Warriors program. I went face to face with one of these hero dogs earlier this year thanks to the folks at Merrick Pet Care.

Approximately 95 percent of dogs used in the program are rescue/shelter or owner surrender dogs. The canine service partner allows the warrior to be part of the solution to their recovery.

“With more than 20 veterans committing suicide every day and the proven effectiveness of a Service Dog in preventing veteran suicide, the time to act is now,” said Rory Diamond, CEO, K9s For Warriors.

June has been designated as PTSD Awareness Month by the National Center for PTSD. You can help and get involved to help K9s For Warriors. Merrick Pet Care is the exclusive dog food partner of K9s for Warriors, and provides each service dog with all their meals and training treats. Your dog can eat like a hero, too. Megan Leavey Movie and Hero Dog Rex

Megan Leavey is based on the true-life story of a young marine corporal (Kate Mara) whose unique discipline and bond with her military combat dog saved many lives during their deployment in Iraq. When she is assigned to clean up the K9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey identifies with a particularly aggressive dog, Rex, and is given the chance to train him. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex completed more than 100 missions until an IED explosion injures them, putting their fate in jeopardy.

As part of team BlogPaws, we were granted exclusive access for the world premiere of the Megan Leavey movie at Yankee Stadium. One of our team members snagged this face-to-face one-minute video with Megan Leavey herself.

K9 Cops

Many police departments do not have the budget for police dog bullet proof/stab-proof vests. This is a scary and alarming fact because hero dogs are putting their lives on the line every day to protect their human police partners.

In August of 2009, Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc., was born to protect K9s with bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the country. Each donation of $1,050 makes it possible to provide a vest to one K9 in the United States. Each vest has a value between $1795 – $2234 and a warranty of five years.

Team BlogPaws has donated body armor to a K9 in need for several years, and here I am (in purple) with K9 Daisy and her police officer handler in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, recently. Daisy is a hero dog and the proud recipient of body armor courtesy BlogPaws through Vested Interest in K-9s.

  1. Oh wow, how amazing. I have so much respect for the K9 that faces dangerous situations just as the humans do. They are truly amazing dogs. I had the pleasure to meet one recently at the state prison in our county and he was so brilliant.

  2. I think working dogs are just amazing. The things they do for people are unbelievable. I really liked this article, is it alright for me to put a link to it on my site?

  3. Animals are everyday heroes. They never think about themselves. My German Shepherd Dog, Tasha, saved me from a car when I was a small child running into the street without looking. I’ll never forget her.

  5. Love this post! 🙂 So happy to be associated with BlogPaws, an organization that gives back in such a great way! My father, Bruce Wayne’s grandfather, has been diagnosed with PTSD and Alzheimer’s, They are both horrible diseases, however, the power of a dog’s love always shines through. While my Dad doesn’t always remember my name, he always remembers “Brucie”, what he calls Bruce Wayne.

Thank you for shining a light on these wonderful organizations!

  6. Send love to all the hero dogs out there! I read some posts in the internet about dogs, who save lives in need, arrest criminals… and about the contribution of K9 in the 9/11. Respect!
