Why does my relationship with my dog impact me on such a deep level? Perhaps you feel the same way about your dog. Here’s my dog mom story and then the contest instructions follow.

Dog Moms Rock

My dog, Dexter, is my never again. After losing my Cocker Spaniel, Brandy Noel, my heart was so very shattered that I promised myself I would never again allow a dog to enter my life and my soul in that way. I soon learned that I could never NOT love this way again. Dexter is my never again. Loving a dog is like breathing to me: It is second nature and an involuntary reflex.

Moreover, loving a dog is a life mantra. I even trademarked the saying, “My Heart Beats Dog.®”

Years ago at a pet blogging conference, I approached a mural. There we stood, dozens of us, waiting to etch a sentiment about our affection for animals on a 2×3 or so piece of paper.

My heart beats dog rolled off my fingertips.

“Did you just make that up,” the gentleman behind me quipped.

“Well, yes, it’s how I feel,” I replied. “My heart beats dog.”

He told me I should trademark it. And so I did. It’s mine.

And maybe it’s your mantra, too. What does it mean to have a heart “beat” dog? I am certainly not alone in this canine cardiac rhythm.

Dogs are more like us than not but they are not humans. Dogs are the best of us when the worst of us breaks our hearts and lets us down.

I embrace a passion for dogs and that passion somehow in this crazy, messed up universe so very perfectly found its way to me. A little girl once lost found her forever home in dogs.

My life is a celebration of dog and their time on Earth, a mere flicker. Poof, we blink and it’s gone. A heart that beats dog is all too keenly aware of its ability to break, and oh how it shatters.

Every day is Christmas with a dog. It’s a true celebration, a present waiting to be unwrapped every day. Cliche, but true. There’s a secret unspoken club for us dog lovers of the highest order. On fortunate days, we find each other: At parks, pet-welcoming stores, on vacations, and at traffic lights. Dogs sniff, we smile. Ages are exchanged, stories are passed on, and dogs bring strangers together, even for a moment.

“He’s 12 and he’s my baby.”

“I swore I’d never get another and never again. And here’s never again.”

The words change, but the feelings are the same: Those who love and have learned to love more richly because of a dog carry a light in their soul. We have hope when the world goes crazy: Dogs want us in it. We are welcome in their worlds. They celebrate our existence. The circle of life is pretty damned special with a dog in it.

Dexter is a Cocker Spaniel who has wrapped himself around my heart and laid claim to it. He is special in every way, and I am blessed to call him my son.

i have 3 girls that have my heart, my whole heart and soul. however, Evie, is my oldest, almost 16 yrs old, i have had Evie since she was 6 wks old. she now is deaf, almost completely blind, has a back disc problem, which causes her not to be able to walk much, dementia, and has terminal cancer. i had another little gal many yrs ago, Rose, who became my parents dog when i had to go off to college. she was their first grandchild and they adored her. she passed away at 7 due to leukemia. so all of my 4 girls are my heart dogs. i am sorry, cant just chose one.

  5. Jacki Jeli-Fan says

Among the things I thank God for are Baci, Snoop Dog and Charley. My heart would be emptier and my life would be less without them

  6. Courtney Stock says

I have a boxer, An American Eskimo Mix and 2 cats I previously had another boxer but he died from ARVC

  7. Amy Hope says

Sunny Has flipped my world upside down. He fell into my lap sept 2016 at 5 months old on his way to a shelter and living in a truck. I knew I was out of my mind with 3 cats bringing this baby home but I couldn’t imagine what might come of him if I didn’t. He’s become the love of my life (is that to much?!) but really, it’s been one of the more tough years in my life and he has kept me moving and kept me laughing with his goofy sense of humor.

  8. Linda Szymoniak says

I currently have three rescued Treeing Walker Coonhounds – Kenji, Kyoko, and Seiji. Two years ago I had five, but lost my deaf girl, Ran, to an autoimmune disorder and exactly one year later lost my old girl, Suki (she was over 15 and had heartworm when we first adopted her). I can’t believe it’s been two years since I lost my Ran. I don’t think I’ll ever be over her. As for dogs I’ve lost, there was my childhood dog – a Beagle named Pixie. Since I became an adult, I’ve lost my Misty (she was just over 16 and had survived a stroke about 1-1/2 years before), Muffie (a Beagle/Lab – possibly Border Collie mix who lived just short of her 16th birthday). Bailey (my sweet Beagle girl who also had HW when I adopted her but still lived to past her 16th birthday). I guess that’s partly why I still have trouble dealing with losing Ran, since she was just five. All my other dogs have lived to be so old.

My first puppy of mine and my husband was Toughy. I fell madly in love and when he passed suddenly I was heartbroken and a customer said I needed another and went online and found a guy expecting a litter of poms and bought me my Macho, the best tip I ever got and I think he’s Toughy reincarnated born twice weeks after and does a lot of the same cute and silly things. I have been so blessed.

  9. Theresa Spaid says

I have so many that i have loved and they are passed. Right now I have my old girl Shunta and my new pup Bandit. They keep going day after day and I love them dearly.

  10. Molly O says

My world would be empty without my dog. We went without one for a year, and that was hard, but we rescued Callie, a puppy mill breeding mama, in October of 2016. Just over six months later and I feel like she is a part of me. When I have to leave her at home, it seems as though I am missing my left arm. I talk to her constantly. She is my therapy dog, both literally – as in I should have one, and she fulfills the role pretty well – and figuratively. She dropped into our lives as a complete surprise and has changed my health for the better. She has done the same for my eight-year-old daughter.

  11. Crissie Woolard says

I have had so many dogs are there truly unconditionally have loved. Matter baby all my love to you now is Named Finn. We rescued him last year and every day I fall more in love with him. He is the most precious adorable Pup!

  12. Stephanie Grant says

I have and had several dog’s that hold a very special place in my heart. Right now I have a Boxer named Loki and a Rottweiler named Cleo that have my heart. But I will never and can’t forget my very first Boxer Whiskey Joe that I used my High School graduation money (oops) to drive all the way to Oklahoma from Arkansas to pick up. He was something truly special and because of him there will always be a Boxer in my house.

  13. Christine Aiello says

I LOVE MY BABY GIRL COCO CHANEL BELLA! She is 11 years old and she is going to live forever! She is my baby girl and always will be. I can’t imagine life without her and I don’t ever want to live without her. She is spoiled completely by me but she deserves it. She has been through a lot in her little life and she still always has a smile on her face and is wiggling her little wigglebutt.

  14. Susan Ladd says

They teach me something new every single day about “Being Kind Is The Way To Go” [which is our motto – perhaps I should trademark that, if it’s available]. It is in my DNA to love them dearly, clearly and completely and with every fiber of my being and I would do anything in the world for them.

  20. Tracey says

I love all my dogs-Jack, Blaze, Roman and Charlotte but Papa was my doggie soulmate. We rescued him when he was 4 1/2 years old. He came to us with one eye. He was a pug who had so many quirk and an unbelievable personality. He went everywhere with me and everyone who met him loved him.. He so loved Monkeys, tennis balls and to swim with me everyday. Sadly a brain tumor took him from me this past January.

  21. mary ballerin says

I fell in love with pugs after inheriting my first dog, Milo. When he passed at age six I was so alone that I spent every night on Petfinder, and I found rescue puppy Petey. I lost him at age five due to complications from a medicine reaction. I have two young pugs now, Liam turns 1 yr old today! But Petey was my bestie, my heart. I love them all but I’ll always treasure Pete’s memory –
    “I miss you the most
And I loved you the best
    And now that you’re gone
I thank God I was blessed,
    Just to know you”

  25. Cheryl Haralson says

Bella filled the hole in our hearts when we lost our precious Pepper 2 1/2 years ago. She is so spoiled and clearly is in charge of our time . . . . she thinks belly rubs should happen 24/7. That’s our Bella/Belly girl!

  26. Karen says

I’m a writer, and couldn’t have possibly summed up my feelings any better than you did about Dexter.

Simply, when we lost our beloved Husker-pup, we vowed to never allow our hearts to be owned and broken like that again.

    Enter Pipa. 🐾

Thanks to the then-popularity of a cocker spaniel forum, we were asked to be the fur-parents of our sweet Pipa, not quite a year after losing Husker. We struggled mightily with a decision.

Thank you Husker, for opening our hearts to Pipa. Thank you Pipa, for showing us the most gentle love ever!

Eight years later, with our sweet, gentle, loving 11 year-old baby girl, we can’t imagine our world without her. 🐾💗

  27. Kat Emerick says

I have Cody, Zoe and had Schultz ( Rest his soul). All three are miniature schnauzers. My furbabies.

  29. Shelley P says

Kandy is my spaniel mix who is turning 18 next month. She is a wonderful dog, super smart and a joy to have.
