Yvonne DiVita: Fidose of Reality Pawer Woman

Many of us dream of a pet-oriented career, but Yvonne DiVita put her dreams into action. Getting to know this dynamo and working side-by-side with her has been a treat and one that has lead Fidose of Reality to name Yvonne a 2012 Pawer Woman. If you need some inspiration and consider a career in the dog world, read on to see how Yvonne rocks on:

yvonne divitaYvonne DiVita hails from Frederick, Colorado (near Boulder). You can find her online at www.lipsticking.com (her original blog dedicated to women in business), or at www.blogpaws.com (her online pet community with its own national conference and a growing group of devoted pet people).

So what exactly does she do? “My business is helping people. Before I co-founded BlogPaws with Tom (my hubby) and Caroline, of Romeo the Cat, I was a writer, a blogger, and a social media strategist. Tom and I worked with folks to teach them the skills they need to be more efficient and proficient with social media” DiVita shares. “Now that we are committed to working with pet people, online and offline, we’re working blogpawsharder than ever. The need to teach good business skills has never been greater! We’ve been doing this “teaching” thing for about 10 years. Before that, I was a web content writer. And, before that… way before that… I was a veterinary technician.”

So how can others prepare for a career in a pet/dog-related business? “Do it. Just be prepared for the work. Don’t buy into that old myth: if you build it they will come. You not only have to build it, you have to market it, you have to promote it, and you have to build relationships with partners, clients, customers, and even… competitors. Keep your perspective: it’s a hard road at first, but once you succeed, you see how worthwhile it was, and is,” DiVita imparts.

She is a pet lover to the core, especially dogs. DiVita’s dream was to be a writer and to live with lots of dogs. She says she never knew how much she could participate in helping dogs and their people as she does now. ” Sometimes that’s even better than seeing a dream come true because it opens doors you never even knew were shut! I’m finding so much wonder on the other side of these new doors – via social media and our national conference, it’s amazing and uplifting and extremely fulfilling.”

So where does she recommend you go to get some help and resources? Fidose loves sharing sites and resources to help our readers grow it forward.

www.smallbusinesstrends.com (Anita Campbell is a good friend – one of the first social media professionals I met, back when blogs were brand new)

http://www.wceohq-radio.org  (my mentor, Bruce Peters – he has great business insight and advice and asks a LOT of questions)

http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/ (for those times I’m just worn out and can’t remember my basic 4th grade training – remember, good writing is essential!)

http://www.sba.gov/content/follow-these-steps-starting-business (always a good resource)

And many of the magazine sites like Fast Company or Inc.

  1. Wow! Carol, thanks for making me sound so good! Of course, the truth is, it’s the fantastic folks like you who matter the most! I couldn’t do anything without you and the hundreds of other women (and men) who have supported me, followed me, or offered insight into the pet world that means so much to me. Thank you for letting me be a pawer woman on your site.
    Yvonne
