Two Books for Dog Lovers of the Highest Order (and Giveaway)

M.K. Clinton has a sense of humor, a love of dogs, and a wit with a talent for prose that make her two books, Showstoppers and The Returns, must haves on your dog-themed reading list. If you are anything like me, you love to read books about dogs but dread that moment when the dog dies.Β  Dog lovers rejoice, it is not so in these books.

You need not read both of these books, but Showstoppers is the second book in The Returns series. It can be read as a standalone book, but do yourself a favor and read The Returns first. Here’s the scoop:

MK Clinton book The ReturnsThe Returns

What would happen if you arrived at the Pearly Gates before your time? Named after her gorgeous Basset Hound, F.B.I. Agent Bentley Clanton finds out the hard way as he is directed to a little-known area devoted to correcting glitches in the longevity stem. Case in point:

Driving back to his hotel, Aiden went over the day’s events in her mind. Something was going on with Miss Faith Fullilove and her dogs, but for the life of him he did not know what. She was way too naive to be hooked up with the likes of Texas Larson, wasn’t she? He would have to do some more digging to find out the answers to his questions.

So his new body as an “early arrival” happens to be a dog, a Basset Hound at that. Can you imagine coming back and adjusting to your life as a dog? He isn’t alone, as he has a Guardian Angel and three other doggie “returns.”

One of my favorite paragraphs:

I got this feeling that there were no religious sects, no race issues, or political divides in Heaven. Everywhere I went up there was a serene place filled with love. The love was so great that you could feel it radiating off of you and into you.

If you’ve read and loved The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold, then this book will resonate with you. Clinton nails it. I want my Heaven to look like this.

Showstoppers

In Showstoppers, The Returns “returns!” Dog lovers, rejoice, because the crime fighting canines are back. Since our own dog, Dexter is a Wigglebutt Warrior, we were excited to dive right into book two in the series. And if you love cats, don’t fret: There are some wise-cracking felines in this book.

Get ready to laugh even harder…Clinton writes:

Pierre trotted over and hopped up on the bed. “Luckily, I’ve never had to deal with the female persuasion, so I’m no expert. It sounds to me like you definitely have a thing for her. I’ll admit she is one fine looking female. The only female I see is a German Shepherd. I mean, some people might frown on y’all being two different types of dogs. Who knows…she might not even Showstoppers MK Clintondate outside her breed.”

Guffaw with us, folks. This is funny stuff. Okay, okay, my dog had a doggie wedding and this is extra hilarious. I mean, if your dog were to start dating, which breed would he or she date? Would it be a mutt? These are the things that run through M.K. Clinton’s mind and we love her for it.

In Showstoppers, human FBI Agent Aiden Davenport continues to fight crime, eat junk food, and bust criminals left and right…with a few twists, turns, and surprises.

You’ll have to read the book to see what we mean.

To help whet your palate, Fidose of Reality is giving away a set of both books to one lucky reader!! Of course, you should hop on over and order a copy of each: These books make good non-caloric Easter basket stuffers, too!

  1. When I was in grade 8, I asked the teacher to move me out of the higher reading group (we all knew which one was which). I didn’t want to read ‘Call of the Wild’ because someone told me dogs die in it. I got to read something easier about kids in a low income neighbourhood. Judge me if you want, but that was less sad for me.

  2. My favorite dog related book is definitely Katie Up and Down the Hall. Of course it’s about a cocker spaniel and she lived in NYC so I had to read it since I love cocker spaniels and love NYC and work in NYC!

  3. They sound like such awesome books! I have a copy of The Returns and I just haven’t gotten around to reading it yet! I feel so bad! Hopefully I can get to it soon!

  4. I love Barking from the Bayou! <3 One of my favorite blog! πŸ™‚ M.K Clinton, Bentley and Pierre always makes us smile, laugh and happy! πŸ˜€ I can't really remember my favorite dog book, so I wanna win these books so they can be my favorite dog books! <3

  5. Any story about a Basset Hound is one I want to read! I love reading about MK Clinton’s Basset. I also live with hounds and a Basset mix and they are the joy of my life. These stories look like a lot of fun!

  6. I think the one animal book I’ll never forget since I read it as a child is The Incredible Journey. I would love to win (and read) these two books. My furbabies are my life so I love reading about other dogs and cats (and other animals), too.

  7. These are great recommendations, I loved both returns books! The Returns are so lovable, I can’t get enough of them. I also enjoyed The Lovely Bones but that story was tough to stomach. The Returns are suspenseful, but also comical, wonderful feel good stories! I Cant wait for book #3

  8. I have to be honest, I have never read a dog book, even though I have a dog. I have always gravitated to cat books, but these sound very interesting and I will have to look into them. Thank you for sharing them!

  9. I’ve heard great things about The Returns and would love the chance to read both books. I loved the Lovely Bones, so it sounds like I’d really like them! Most of the books I read are cat books, but I certainly like dog books, too πŸ™‚

  10. Love Barking From the Bayou and these sound wonderful! A great addition to any library (including my own!) I have so many favorite dog books – but I do love EPIc Dog Tales: Heartfelt Stories About Amazing Dogs Living & Loving Life With Canine Epilepsy. Yes, it’s mine, but the reason I love it is actually because in it is the personal stories by the families of 124 amazing dogs from various breeds from across the world who have lived with or is living with Canine Epilepsy. The stories just make me smile and cry and confirms the hope for dogs with seizures. And you know I’m a big advocate for Canine Epilepsy Awareness. M.K.’s books sound just amazing. And the book models are just adorable! Yes, these are on my “to get” list!

  11. MK Clinton is totally pawsome! I always love to stop by and see what her dogs are doing on her blog. She has a wonderful sense of humor and I’m sure her books do too. As far as my favorite dog-themed book, does The Wizard of Oz count? Toto is a great canine character. πŸ™‚

  12. I’ve just recently read The Returns and love it, I’d have to say that’s my favorite (grown-up) dog book. Years ago, when my son was young and our miniature dachshund Melanie was not as young as he, some of our favorite books featured dachshunds. The one I remember best is The Hallowwiener, a classic for sure!
