Safer Ways to Remove Dog Stains and Odors

Dog stains and odors are a fact of life if you share life with a canine. Whether in puppyhood, adolescence, adulthood, or their senior years: dog stains and odors will happen. Thankfully, there are ways to remove those stains and stinks without worrying about toxic products.

Since I have a dog who has an affection for finding animal poop and then rolling in it (fun times, I know), my curiosity piqued when the folks at OdorKlenz® crossed my path.

OdorKlenz products are safe for both people and pets, are non-toxic, fragrance free, environmentally friendly, and contain a broad spectrum of odor eliminators. Since I have allergies to a variety of scents, I agreed to try both the OdorKlenz Pet Urine eliminator and their pet shampoo.

Dog Stains on Carpeting

I am lucky in that our dog learned to pee outside within a week when he was a puppy. As an adult, the only accidents we’ve had in the house are those of the mud variety. Since the OdorKlenz pet urine eliminator is designed for households with dogs who have accidents, we enlisted the help of our dog’s BFF, Zola.

Due to ongoing use of steroids for irritable bowel disease, Zola has a rare but occasional urine accident in the house. She is 14 years young, so this is to be expected from time to time.

When Zola had a recent accident, here’s what her mom did:

  1. Soaked up the excess urine with paper towels.
  2. Treated the area with warm, clean water.
  3. Soaked up excess water, leaving the area a bit damp.
  4. She then applied Pet Urine eliminator to the carpet stain and worked it into the rug with a scrubbing brush.
  5. Pour a bit of fresh clean water over the OdorKlenz treated area.
  6. Apply pressure to the treated area a bit.
  7. Let it work for about 15 minutes.

It was recommended to soak up any excess water and do this a few times so it dries properly. Let the area dry.

After about 24 hours, the area dried and she vacuumed up the residue. Zola’s mom was super pleased to see the stain was gone and the odor disappeared.

Help For Stinky Dogs

Sometimes a dog will be, well, a dog, and acquire a stinky smell. In our case, our pooch, Dexter, rolled in bear poop a few weeks ago. We live in an area where a black bear was spotted, and I can tell you my dog found his waste. It smells disgusting.

After rinsing him off at the park with water, we got home and proceeded to the tub. There, we tried the OdorKlenz pet shampoo. It is touted to be tough of odors but gentle on pets.

It matters not to me what the claims of a product are, but I do worry about its safeness for my dog. Here are the ingredients:

  • Castile Soap/Coconut Oil Potassium Soap
  • Glycerin/Vegetable Glycerin Water
  • Magnesium Hydroxide
  • Magnesium Oxide
  • Zinc Oxide
  • Titanium Oxide

There are no perfumes or dyes and my dog was not itchy after bathing in it. Like me, my dog has skin sensitivities. I would never put a product on Dexter that would instigate skin issues.

I am happy to say that this product did the trick on getting rid of bear poop smell. Sometimes I have to bathe Dex twice in a shampoo to get the nasty odors out, but not with OdorKlenz.

Bonus Dog Urine Remover Hack

You’ve made it this far and I am here to reward YOU! Here’s a clean up urine from rugs trick I learned by accident! Go me! Your dog is bound to have accidents during this process. If an accident occurs and it is on a rug, you need to get the stain up using the above product.

Then, place 3 to 4 paper towels and an aluminum can on top of the spot. The can needs to be weighty, like a soup can, and let it there for a few hours. The aluminum pulls the urine up out of the rug and into the paper towel, which you can later throw away. It works for us every time!

    1. You would have to do a spot test first. It is supposed to be amazing for cat urine. Be sure to check their website – they have explicit details there. You can also use it with a rug shampooer or spot bot for maximum efficacy.

  1. Thanks for the review. I am using Rocco and Roxy brand now for this odor problem. I have never tried OdorKlenz. After reading this article, I am convinced and will give a try next time. I will let you know here that how I find it good or not.

  2. I am using Nature’s Miracle Advanced Stain and Odor Eliminator Dog. But now a days I can get bad smell from the dog after 2 or 3 days of bathing. Should I use Rocco and Roxy brand now?
