Have you ever wondered what your dog would look like if he or she were put into cartoon form? I now know what my it takes to make my dog into a cartoon character…and take it to the next level. I love graphics and love the unique look and feel of a business card that sticks, a blog that pops, and a social media presence with flavor and fun. As a dog blogger/writer and heavily immersed in the pet industry, I know that part of my branding is my logo and the artwork that goes with it. I wanted a makeover, wanted it to be unique, and wanted it to reflect my newly trademarked mantra, “My Heart Beats Dog.™”
So I did what any dog lover of the highest order would do: I looked for a cat graphic guru. Indeed, who says cats and dogs can't get along? After working with and receiving my graphics from “Glorgirly,” the enthusiasm and glee for the end result is definitely share-worthy. The end result is at the end of this interview. In order to get to know the lady behind the cat, here's the inside scoop on one of the best graphic artists I've worked with to date:
Fidose of Reality: So who is Glogirly?
Debbie Glovatsky: When I married my sweetheart “Gloman” in 2002, (ok, not his real name, but EVERYONE calls him that) I immediately became known as Glogirl. Well, that domain was taken and in turn, Glogirly.com, the blog, was born. Truth be told, I much prefer Glogirly. It’s more playful, whimsical and just, more ME.
GLOGIRLY the Blog
Not knowing where to start or what to write in this so-called blog thing, Gloman suggested I have my cat, Katie, introduce me. So in a tone befitting her sarcastic personality, I began writing, “Hi everyone, Katie here…” and it stuck. I’ve been in love with writing Katie’s laugh-out-loud dry wit ever since.
At the time I thought I was pretty clever…I mean who else could possibly have a blog written by their cat or dog, right? HA! It didn’t take long to figure out there were others like me and I quickly became part of the amazing pet blogging community.
After I got my blogging feet wet and gained a little notoriety, I began helping others with their blog designs, clever birthday graphics and Facebook profiles. I was in LOVE. It was like the perfect recipe of all my favorite ingredients – animals, blogging, design, photography. Better than chocolate. Ok, on most days.
That’s when GLOGIRLY DESIGN was born. I specialize in creating a visual brand personality for pet bloggers and writers. My style is clean, bold and savvy with a dash of whimsy thrown in for fun. I design everything from logos to headers to social media buttons …Facebook and Twitter profiles…business cards and swag. No project is too big or small. You can do it all, or maybe you just need a couple of cool social media buttons.
What’s the most common design project? Blog headers, definitely.
What’s the most unusual design project? A cowbell.
Are you strictly a CAT designer? NO! I do it doggy-style, piggy-style, bunny-style…I’ve even worked for a goat and an occasional human.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever been paid? “You read my mind!!!”
I’ve got oodles of cool examples of real life projects and designs on my new website, www.GLOGIRLYDESIGN.com. Just click on the sidebar buttons to explore and tease your own imagination. You can contact me directly through the site and via email (email@example.com) to learn more about pricing or chat about your potential project and questions.
Fidose of Reality: What is your “day job?”
Debbie: I’m a Visual Merchandising & Design Consultant. I help retailers, big and small, look cool by creating shops and environments that compel their customers to shop ‘til they drop. (www.debbieglovatsky.com)
Fidose of Reality: How long have you been involved in doing graphics and why?
Debbie: I’ve worked in visual marketing and graphic design for more years than I’ll admit. Let’s just say I started out when designers used things like paper and markers and Apples were something you ate. ; )
A few years ago, when my marketing position at a national retailer fell victim to the economy, I went back to school to brush up on my computer design skills. I figured a great way to keep current would be to start a blog. I’d get a chance to work in Photoshop and Illustrator regularly and I might even learn a thing or two about social media along the way.
Fidose of Reality: Finally, we've been hearing about Waffles. Who exactly is Waffles?
Debbie: Well it’s much more than something you put maple syrup on! Waffles (a.k.a. Waffles Too) is the newest feline member of the Glogirly Family. He’s the adorable orange-troublemaker-kitten that has become an online sensation with GLOGIRLY fans. He’s loved for his limited vocabulary, goofy antics and jazz hands. Much to Katie’s chagrin, he recently won the BlogPaws Nose-to-Nose Award for Best Twitter Design. They’re still not speaking.
Oh so here are the crown jewels that are now my Fidose of Reality graphics….. I am pleased as punch with these:
